Maximizing Mobility in Older Adults

This toolkit contains resources for teaching learners how to address mobility disability in older people in the primary care setting. It contains introductory material appropriate for undergraduate and graduate level learners.

Becky J. Olson-Kellogg, PT, DPT, GCS and Elizabeth Choma, PT, DPT, GCS authored this toolkit. Dr. Becky Olson-Kellogg is a board certified geriatric physical therapist and a certified exercise expert in aging adults. She was the founding director of the Geriatric Residency for physical therapists at the University of Minnesota. She retired in January 2023 from her positions of Associate Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy, a graduate faculty member in the Program in Gerontology, and a member of the Minnesota Northstar Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program, all at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Olson-Kellogg is a member of the Governor-appointed Minnesota Board on Aging. Dr. Choma is a board-certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy and a PhD candidate in the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota.

This toolkit contains two components: a Learner Module and a compendium of Teaching and Learning Resources.

The Learner Module is designed for students. It is a digital, interactive learning activity. To assign the module to students, instructors can click on the Learner Module icon to the left and copy the URL into their teaching documents for their learners to access. The module is free and accessible to all.

Note: When accessing the learner module, some users may wish to use the CTRL/Command + or – function to adjust the size of the text on their screen.

The compendium of Teaching and Learning Resources is designed for instructors. It includes a list of current readings, clinical guidelines, additional (optional) case studies, and links to assessment tools, health professional organizations, patient advocacy organizations, patient education materials, and other resources on the topic. Many of the resources are also available in the Learner Module so that students can learn of them. Instructors can select the resources that work best for their learners and embed them into their course materials.
