This interactive resource provides faculty in schools of nursing with guidance and resources for clinical teaching in nursing homes. It uses a framework of four key components for successful student clinical learning experiences in nursing homes:
- Faculty who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the nursing home as a clinical learning environment for students
- Nursing homes that provide quality care with an adequate number of RNs functioning within the scope of their practice, use evidence-based nursing practices and base nursing practice on a resident-directed care philosophy.
- A committed and growing academic-practice partnership
- Well-designed learning experiences that build student competencies in care for older adults, improving quality, and developing leadership skills.
Resources include guidance in selecting and evaluating a nursing home for clinical learning, strategies for developing and maintaining an academic partnership, over 20 guided learning activities that faculty can use with students during their nursing home clinical, and templates and surveys to plan rotation and evaluate the clinical experience.
Christine Mueller, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN authored this toolkit. She is a Professor at the University of Minnesota, School of Nursing whose scholarship focuses on quality of care and life for residents in nursing homes as influenced by nurse and organizational factors.
This toolkit contains two components: a learner module for nursing faculty and a set of quick and easy tipsheets faculty can use to create learning activities for nursing students in long term care settings.
The Learner Module is designed for current or future nursing instructors. It is a digital, interactive learning activity. The module is free and accessible to all.
Note: When accessing the learner module, some users may wish to use the CTRL/Command + or – function to adjust the size of the text on their screen.
